It looks like were not going to be doing the shop this summer. We may end up doing it in a different form another year, switching to strictly an online presence or something similar. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I’ll see you guys on the water.

Stones and Drakes

Here’s some of the flies we’ll be carrying in the shop next year. People seemed to want lots of stonefly and drake nymphs and streamers for the lower river, so me and Andy are getting the supplies ready. -Dan

2 tone chrome midge

Heres one of those promised instructionals. So far Ive made 3-4 different ones. This one is a simple little midge I like as an alternative to zebra midges. If you click the first picture it will do a slide show and you can watch it step by step.

Materials are

hook – TMC 2488H or comparable heavy wire scud hook.
thread – Danvilles 3/0 monocord, black.
200 denier white GSP for gill filaments or smaller denier for smaller flies to taste(this was 100 denier doubled over on a size 18 hook)
black beadhead, tungsten or brass.
silver flashabou or pearl mirage tinsel

Thread your bead onto the white GSP (you can thread a stack of beads onto the GSP at the same time if you plan to tie multiples), then slide the hook onto the threaded bead. Start your thread at the bead. Attach some tinsel as you wind your thread down the hook. Leave your tag end from your thread. Wrap the thread back up to the bead, then build a small taper with the thread up and down the hook. End with the thread at the bead. Wrap the tinsel, tie down at the bead and cut the excess. Wind your thread tag end with spaced turns over the tinsel. Tie off, trim excess. Trim the gill filaments to length. Coat in “hard as nails” or similar glue. Now wait for it to dry and its ready to fish!

Happy Holidays!

Andy’s out with his family for the holidays and I’m going to be doing the same. Ill be back up in the mountains in early January. I think Andy’s going to be on the road most of the winter, doing his usual stuff(lots of fly tying) plus some steelheading and rock hounding. I just picked up a camera with a good zoom and macro features and Im going to be doing some fly tutorials here for you winter tyers when I get back. We’ll have some midge patterns, baetis and even a few skwala, plus maybe some steelhead and streamer patterns. Im also up to doing some popular requests if people want some help with something. Ill try to have a fun mix of different things. Ill see you guys in a few weeks.
